REVIEW OF 2016 ZIMBABWE DIASPORA POLICY

The Department of International Trade, Investment, and Diaspora in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade has commenced consultations among stakeholders to review the 2016 Diaspora Policy. The purpose is to attract our Diaspora to take an active role in the national economic development process and develop mechanisms for dialogue and partnership with Zimbabweans abroad. The intention is also to create formal channels for investing in Zimbabwe by the Diaspora and maximize the potential of their contribution to the country’s development. The following are some of the engagements that the Ministry is tasked to achieve;

  • Build trust and confidence between the Government and the Zimbabwean Diaspora Communities with a view to developing a mutually beneficial relationship.
  • Acknowledge the Diaspora’s contribution to the Zimbabwe economy through investments in the national economy, remittances, philanthropy, and social support.
  • Assure the Diaspora of the Government’s commitment to enhance the protection of their interests.
  • Facilitate dialogue and information exchange between the Government and the Diaspora.
  • Identify ways of incorporating Diaspora participation in Zimbabwe’s economic and social development.
  • Mobilize members of the Diaspora to complement the Government efforts in the provision of community development projects.
  • Tap into the Diaspora resources and encourage the use of formal channels for remittances, trade, and tourism projects in Zimbabwe.
  • Facilitate exports of value-added products using Diaspora communities as a conduit to foreign markets, and
  • Create a platform for skills and knowledge transfer, leveraging on the presence of diaspora communities in key markets.

DIASPORA LAND APPLICATIONS IN ZIMBABWE

The Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development welcomes applicants for land by Zimbabweans in the diaspora. Upon receipt of the application, the Ministry will forward it to the provinces of the applicant’s choice where a waiting list is drawn up. Currently, the government is undertaking a Land Audit spearheaded by the Zimbabwe Land Commission. One of the Commission’s main tasks is to identify available land for allocation. The Provincial Land Committees will then screen applicants in terms of set criteria and recommend them to the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development for allocation.

In the meantime, those who require land should complete the required form which is available upon request at the Embassy. However, it should be noted that while applications can be received from those applying for land, it is not possible to allocate land to all applicants..
